The Nose Creek Watershed Water Management Plan (NCWWMP)

Nose Creek Watershed Water Management Plan (Complete document – 4.6 MB .PDF, right click the link to download the file) The NCWWMP outlines goals and policy statements to guide jurisdictions toward protecting Nose Creek from further degradation. The Plan provides opportunities for rehabilitation efforts along the creek. The NCWWMP is a living document that will change as conditions change within the watershed.

Why do we have watershed management plans?

Alberta’s Water For Life Strategy dictates that all major river basins (11 basins) create watershed management plans to guide protection of water quality and the ability of rivers, creeks and lakes to stay healthy in order to provide the natural goods and services inherent in healthy ecosystems. To facilitate this, major basins form Watershed Planning and Advisory Coucils (WPACs). Nose Creek lies with the Bow River basin that has the Bow River Basin Council as its WPAC. The Water For Life Strategy specifies these goals for watershed protection:

  • Safe, secure drinking water
  • Healthy aquatic ecosystems
  • Reliable, quality water supplies for a sustainable economy

The Strategy also encourages cooperation of local stakeholders to develop water management plans for any waterbody. Watershed Stewardship Groups (WSG) form to create watershed management plans to guide protection of water quality and the ability of rivers, creeks and lakes to stay healthy. The Nose Creek watershed is a major tributary of the Bow River and under much pressure from varying land uses across the basin. Nose Creek flows through many different land use jurisdictions and that causes inconsistencies in the level of watershed protection. Update of the Nose Creek Watershed Water Management Plan

In 2016, the NCWP initiated the process to update the Nose Creek Plan. The update was necessary to reflect advancements in knowledge, changes in provincial and municipal policies, and to address new challenges in land and water resource management. The NCWP engaged with watershed stakeholders, and municipal and provincial staff throughout the process. Recommendations in the Plan were made to work toward achieving desired outcomes for improved stormwater management, good water quality, retention of riparian areas and wetlands in urbanizing areas, and preservation of biodiversity in the watershed. The 2008 Nose Creek Watershed Water Management Plan (see below for The Nose Creek Watershed Water Management Plan 2008) was implemented until the updated Nose Creek Plan was completed and approved.
